OUR STORY

IROANOKE AVENUE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL is one of four K-4 elementary schools in the district. It is located on Roanoke Avenue in the center of the Riverhead community. The school has 390 students.

The Roanoke Avenue School is especially proud that it has the distinction of having been chosen as a National Blue Ribbon School. Roanoke's building has been named a historical landmark.

Popular events include its NonFiction Fairs, its Poetry Jams and innovative reading and writing programs, such as "Fairy Tale Theater," a program whereby students rewrite well-known fairy tales and act them out. This is just one of the many creative end-of-unit Writers Workshop celebrations that reflects the school's partnership with Columbia University's Teachers College Readers/Writers Workshop. Roanoke also boasts an outstanding school newsletter, the Community Link, which features student writers.
